Keeping up with the ever-changing field of social media takes some work.  Basically, it’s all just a big experiment, and if you’re going to make it work, you have to stay on your toes.  In addition to keeping an eye on what’s going on in my own social media efforts, participating in numerous discussions, reading dozens of blog posts a day on the topic, and listening to social media/marketing podcasts whenever I’m in the car, I also read books on the subject.

Now, the problem with books on social media is that many of them are out of date before they actually hit the shelves.  However, there are some real gems out there that I would highly recommend.  These are books whose core  information is not going to be out of date by the time you get it home.

The first book I’d like to recommend, and one I’ve just finished reading, is: Trust Agents: Using the Web to Build Influence, Improve Reputation, and Earn Trust by Chris Brogan and Julien Smith

Regardless of what happens in the vast field of social media, the core message of this book will always hold true in whatever kind of marketing you’re doing.  Chris and Julien have written a very readable, practical book that is mostly about the attitude behind successful social media (and traditional media) marketing.  These core values will never change as long as we’re dealing with human beings.

If you’re interested in moving forward with your marketing efforts, you can’t go wrong if you start with this book.
