On Tuesday we looked at Setting Business Goals With the Ultimate Business Success Equation. Hopefully you have your nice “S.M.A.R.T” goal ready and waiting for your attention today.

We’re going to use the example we started with on Tuesday: we want to increase our leads by 10% and we’ve decided to pick “join a Networking group” from the ideas I listed on 21 Ways to Find Leads for Your Business Here’s how you break that down into mini goals by working backwards.

“Start with the end in mind”, goes the saying. So on an open blank document write:

  1. Join a Networking Group

Now, think backwards. What is the step right before this final goal? Well, you need to choose which groups you’re going to join. So now your list looks like this:

  1. Choose which group(s) are probably best for me to join
  2. Join a Networking Group

And then? Well, you can’t really choose a group until you’ve been there and see how they operate and whether or not they’re going to be suitable, so your list now reads:

  1. Attend the groups and weigh the good and the bad
  2. Choose which group(s) are probably best for me to join
  3. Join a Networking Group

But of course, before you can attend them, you have to schedule them, right? So…

  1. schedule meeting dates for networking groups I want to attend in my calendar
  2. Attend the groups and weigh the good and the bad
  3. Choose which group(s) are probably best for me to join
  4. Join a Networking Group

But to schedule them you need to know when and where they’re meeting:

  1. Find out when and where they meet
  2. schedule meeting dates for networking groups I want to attend in my calendar
  3. Attend the groups and weigh the good and the bad
  4. Choose which group(s) are probably best for me to join
  5. Join a Networking Group

Of course, you don’t want to attend any old meeting, you need to make sure the ones you attend are somehow appropriate:

  1. Discover which groups meet my current need
  2. Find out when and where they meet
  3. schedule meeting dates for networking groups I want to attend in my calendar
  4. Attend the groups and weigh the good and the bad
  5. Choose which group(s) are probably best for me to join
  6. Join a Networking Group

But before that you need to know what groups meet in your city in your target market area:

  1. List the groups meeting in my area or dealing with my target market
  2. Discover which groups meet my current need
  3. Find out when and where they meet
  4. schedule meeting dates for networking groups I want to attend in my calendar
  5. Attend the groups and weigh the good and the bad
  6. Choose which group(s) are probably best for me to join
  7. Join a Networking Group

And before that you need to research what all your options are in your city, so…

  1. Do a search on Google or with the help of the library to discover the networking groups available in my city
  2. List the groups meeting in my area or dealing with my target market
  3. Discover which groups meet my current need
  4. Find out when and where they meet
  5. schedule meeting dates for networking groups I want to attend in my calendar
  6. Attend the groups and weigh the good and the bad
  7. Choose which group(s) are probably best for me to join
  8. Join a Networking Group

Now what you have instead of a vague statement: “Join a Networking group” you have a workable checklist of step-by-step goals that all lead up to the main big goal of joining the network group. This is the most effective, procrastination-killing way to set goals for your business. Try it yourself! If this is the month you’re going to work on increasing leads in your business, set a goal like this, and every day commit to checking off one or two of the smaller goals that lead up to it. You’ll be amazed at what you accomplish.

Try it out and let me know how it works for you!
