Following on from my last post, here’s another sneak peek into the quality of teaching that you’ll be seeing at the Social Media Intensive. This time from Josh Turner who’ll be doing the segment on LinkedIn:

3 Strategies for Finally Getting Results on LinkedIn

1. Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile

Recently a marketing consultant in St. Louis was telling me about a new client of his. “How’d the two of you connect,” I asked. The client found him on LinkedIn.

He found him because his LinkedIn profile was optimized to rank highly for terms such as St. Louis small business marketing, marketing consultant, internet marketing St. Louis, etc.

Optimizing your profile for the keywords that are most relevant to your business is the first thing you should do so that people who are searching for your services will find you first.

But it’s not just about keywords. Once a prospect lands on your LinkedIn profile, be sure that they are impressed by your experience and the benefits that you bring to your clients.

Don’t forget to include a compelling call-to-action. This is how you start moving casual profile views into real business leads, a bigger email list, and sales.

2. Develop a clear prospect profile.

Do you know who your most important business prospects are? Do you know what groups they hang out in? What kind of content they’d be interested in?

The answers to these questions are what I call a “prospect profile.” It is really the cornerstone of an effective LinkedIn marketing plan.

You have to know who your prospect is and what they want/need to help their business. Understanding this can allow you to identify specific types of people as prospects, and develop a search criteria to find them.

From there, you can find out which LinkedIn groups these prospects are members of. Join these groups, engage in discussions, and from time-to-time share your own content with the group.

Having this clear prospect profile, and formulating a plan around it, is what will guarantee that your efforts are super focused.

3. Create a Plan and Stick With It

Those who get the greatest results have a clear plan and they consistently execute.

As discussed above, the prospect profile is a big part of the plan. After that’s established, determine what the activities are that you’re going to do.

Line them out, put them on a calendar, and do it.

Too many people dabble and never gain any traction. If your clients are other businesses, then LinkedIn is where it’s at. Don’t make the mistake that so many make by being little more than a casual observer on LinkedIn.

Commit to a plan, be purposeful and deliberate, and make it part of your daily routine.
