So, going back to my last post… Let’s replay that rude open house scene in a way that might have been truly beneficial to everyone involved: You have your open house, a stranger comes in with friends and is welcomed. Now, instead of shouting an invitation to everyone in the room and encouraging them to all leave and go to the other open house, they come to you quietly, explain that they also have an open house going on at their place of business that day, and would be interested in sharing the traffic. You agree to take their information, and as people are leaving your open house, you hand out the information for your guest’s open house and encourage them to stop by on their way home. Your new guest returns to their open house and does the same for you. Talk about a “win/win”. Now you have two businesses sharing traffic that they have each worked hard and honestly for. Each business receives an endorsement from the other, making both businesses look great, and there’s no awkwardness in the room. How does this play out on Facebook? You are trying to build some “likes” and credibility for your business. You come to my page and privately request to work together to help build each others’ businesses. If there’s any kind of possible synergy we agree that on one day I will post something about your business on my page and invite people to go and check it out. Later that same week (or perhaps the next week) you do the same on your page for me. Here’s what that win looks like: The “likes” happen because people are actually interested, and they’ll probably read what you post. Each person lends their hard-won credibility to the invitation showing themselves to be open to collaboration, and each giving the other business a higher level of clout and authority. There is no awkwardness in the room, and everyone is delighted Isn’t that a MUCH better scenario? So please, “like” my page if you truly “like” it. If you are liking it just to get another “like” from me, please refrain from posting that on my business page, but I do invite and encourage you to meet with me behind the scenes so we can work out something of mutual benefit that’s far more powerful than pages simply liked and forgotten. I’d sure appreciate it! Thanks!

Whaaaaat?! Why wouldn’t I want more “likes”? I build my reputation on my Facebook page carefully, selectively, and honestly. As far as I can control it, all the likes you see there are likes from people who stopped by and honestly liked my page. This is important to me. Let me try and explain what I’m on about and set the scene: You are throwing an open house for your business clients and prospects. You’ve set the stage, ordered great food, hired stellar entertainment, and you’ve got people milling around making sure everyone has what they need, is getting helped with their questions, and is having a great time. Someone you don’t know shows up and brings some friends – great news! You work to make them all feel welcome and engaged. Suddenly this person shouts to the room, “Hey! There’s an open house going on at my place of business, too! Come on over and bring your friends!”. They leave and take a handful of your guests with them. You stand there, shocked at this appalling display of bad manners. That is bad manners, right? We’re all on the same page there? Well this week alone I’ve had that exact scenario 3 times on my HotSpot Facebook page Inexperienced marketers stop by my page, “like” it, and then post boldly: “I liked your page please like mine!” and then post their link. So, a couple of things are happening now. Someone who’s just browsing through and lands on my page with enough focus to read through might look at that link and click away, never to come back (shiny bauble syndrome) because they weren’t able to spend quite enough time on my page to be properly engaged before being drawn away. I have worked hard to create that traffic in an honest and upright manner through carefully crafted blog posts and status updates after considerable research. I’d like those new eyes to land there long enough to find something of value in what I’ve gathered just for them. If this happens often on my page and I don’t remove it, people will think that all my “likes” are contrived and have no meaning, and my authority and integrity suffer. Some other marketers (not me – yet) may get tired of this and start blocking the person posting, and then the poster’s page could well get shut down. There is no win/win here when the game is played this way: The person receiving the like in order to gain reciprocation looks silly (or worse, rude) on the page their posting on. The recipient feels frustrated and deletes the request, creating no gain for either party – or – they go and “like” the other page, but because it’s not interesting to them because the “like” wasn’t honestly gained, stop following the updates and so the “like” has no meaning There is a better way. A way that builds trust and authority for both sides, and builds strong collaborative bonds between [...]

As I mentioned earlier I’ve been dealing with my “why”. A couple of days ago my father forwarded this video to me, and it really struck a chord. In the MLM business we were always told to “know your why” but it had more to do with cars, debt payment, and more time with family. This is different. This is knowing that visceral why for why you’re motivated to do anything. It’s over an hour long (70 minutes) and is worth watching. (sorry for the odd way of posting this. NOTHING I try today will allow me to actually embed the video here. WordPress has simplified the solution to embedding videos and it now doesn’t work AT ALL on my blog. After a 40 minute battle I gave up. Sigh) If it speaks to you, I highly recommend the book Greg Habstritt is talking about: Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action*

I’ve been geting some coaching. Very helpful. Very beneficial. Interestingly enough, all three coaches are asking me about the same thing, but in different ways and for different reasons. Seems the question on the table is “Why on earth are you doing this?” One wants me to think about my business, reach inside and find three words that describe my why. The other one wants me to express my passion for doing the business in three words where one of them is a verb. The third one just wants to understand my heart in order to help me be more effective. Funny that all three need the same kind of answer. The answer to the first one is “Trust, Abundance, Freedom”. The answer to the second is “Making Dreams Happen” and the answer to the third is “because I get so excited when I can help to make dreams materialize” It’s all kind of the same thing. I love what I do because running your own business is all about dreams. I’m realizing, however, that unless I also really focus on increasing the money, my message and gifts can only go so far. I can only help a small group of people. The more money I can earn, the broader my reach, and the more people I can help. My brain is buzzing with ideas, and with trying to get some of those ideas to “settle” so we can actually make them happen. I’d like to have 4 clones of myself for about 30 days – wow, what a difference that would make! But at least now I am much clearer on my purpose and direction so I can just focus on things that will move that forward instead of chasing after the “shiny bauble syndrome” that I talked about last week. What about you – can you describe your passion in three words? I’d love you to share them with us below! Darlene Be A Star!
I have this very cool friend and business woman who has something of a Midas Touch. She is creativity on steroids and I like to just check in with her somewhere on a daily basis in the hope it will all rub off! Her name? Kathleen D. Mailer. I’ll be honest, our beginning was a struggle because I just didn’t “get” what she was doing. Now, however, the scales have fallen from my eyes, and I am in awe. In addition to creating a truly genius marketing plan around her “Today’s Business Woman” Magazine (you really need to chat with her about what she’s created here – it’s not your run-of-the-mill magazine situation!) she’s now pulling together an extravaganza to beat all extravaganzas: The International Christian Business Woman Awards. This is going to be quite the experience. I had the privilege of hearing about so many amazing things in the works here and cannot wait to see it live. Lots of hush-hush still going on as Kathleen pulls together the loose ends, but believe me when I say it’s going to knock your socks off. If this is something you want to be a part of (and I can’t recommend it highly enough) there are two things you can do: You can nominate a Christian Business Woman who stands out as a woman who always puts Christ first in her business. We want lots of great nominees to give these women some recognition for all their hard work. You can become a sponsor. Obviously to do this in a manner that will be respected it’s important to have the necessary funding. Kathleen has pulled out all the stops to make sure this is an unforgettable event, and those who help bring it all together through sponsorship will be more than generously rewarded. When Kathleen called me up about becoming a sponsor, our whole team was so excited about what she’s offering and how it’s going to create a HUGE win/win for our business, that we all volunteered to cut our own pay to be part of this (note that we’re a family run business, and it was two teenagers who cheerfully volunteered their pay!) It’s THAT GOOD! But don’t take my word for it, go check it out yourself, get involved wherever you can, nominate someone who’s deserving, and spread the word! It will be SO worth it! (Heck my daughter’s even going to wear a dress!!!!) Darlene Be A Star! Post your comments below and join in the conversation (or get it started!) and then share this post with your friends using the different share buttons on the blog. I’d sure appreciate it!
